Press focuses on insurgency funds probe, and confusion in House of Assembly

Nigerian newspapers on Wednesday, 28 November 2018, hit the streets with stories on the House of Representatives resolution to probe funds meant to fight insurgency.

The press also zoomed in on the ongoing crisis in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

The Guardian reported that the House of Representatives has ordered an immediate probe into the use of funds appropriated for the war against insurgency in the country.

The Punch said there was confusion on Tuesday, 27 November 2018, at the sitting of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly as five All Progressives Congress lawmakers attempted to impeach the state Governor, Udom Emmanuel.

The five lawmakers were the ones whose seats were recently declared vacant by the Speaker of the House, Onofiok Luke.

The Sun newspaper said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has, as at May this year, recovered over N527 billion, as well as foreign currencies, through the Whistle Blower Policy.

The Leadership newspaper reported that the issue of monitoring campaign funding and spending has pitched the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against each other.

ThisDay newspaper said that in an apparent effort to boost the morale of soldiers fighting Boko Haram in the North-east, President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday called off his five-day casual leave as a mark of respect for the victims of the insurgents’ attacks across the battlefields in the region.

The Vanguard reported that two days after suspected herdsmen shot dead a pipeline guard at Edjekota-Ogor community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, hundreds of women, yesterday, stormed the Ughelli Council Secretariat and the Division Police Station in protest of the activities of armed herdsmen.
