The presidency has released a statement acknowledging the passing of Madzikane II Thandisizwe Diko, the husband of the spokesperson of the president, Khusela Diko.
The presidency took to Twitter on Monday, 22 February 2021, to share a statement conveying President Cyril Ramaphosa’s condolences to Khusela Diko, following the passing of her husband and traditional leader, Madzikane II Thandisizwe Diko. Details on the cause of his death have not been revealed yet; however, it was reported that he died after a short illness on Sunday, 21 February 2021.
The statement read, “President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his sincere condolences to Presidential Spokesperson Ms Khusela Diko, on the passing of her husband, senior traditional leader Madzikane II Thandisizwe Diko of the AmaBhaca.”
However, the fascination for some commentators was the suggestion that Diko is still part of the president’s team. While condolences were conveyed to the Diko family, the matter of Madzikane II Thandisizwe Diko’s passing rehashed the suggestion of his involvement in the personal protective equipment (PPE) corruption saga, which led to Diko’s indefinite leave of absence from office.
