Local manufacturer CIPLA South Africa said the drug, which is believed to be effective in treating patients with severe Covid-19, is now available in the country.
CIPLA’s announcement comes after the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority gave the green light for the use of remdesivir in hospitals across the country.
The local company began manufacturing the drug following an agreement with Gilead Sciences Incorporated, which owns the drug’s trademark. The deal led Gilead to license CIPLA to manufacture and distribute the antiviral drug in one-hundred and twenty-seven countries, including South Africa.
The drug was first issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in May after a study showed it reduced healing time in patients with Covid-19.
