POPCRU CEC commits to defending collective bargaining

Published on

COSATU has issued the POPCRU CEC’s statement pledging its commitment to defending collective bargaining for workers, and to ensuring that democratically won gains are not destroyed by any means.

On Monday, 27 September 2021, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) issued a statement on the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) Central Executive Committee held under the theme: 30 years of Working Class Consciousness, Defending Workers Rights and Building a Self-Sustainable Union. The POPCRU CEC defended collective bargaining, noting that there is now an alleged open and well-coordinated drive to destroy public sector unions and end collective bargaining.

It further stated that the right of workers to stand together to negotiate with their employer about wages, hours, safety, and other working conditions is also under threat. The CEC believes collective agreement must be implemented to its logical conclusion without any contamination of any form. It stated that it remains unwaveringly committed to defending collective bargaining, with plans to pursue all avenues in this regard, so as to ensure that agreements are honoured.
