Piet Matosa loses NUM presidency to Joseph Montisetse

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) concluded its 16th national congress on Friday, 22 June 2018, after finally electing new leadership for the union’s top nine positions.

Former NUM president, Piet Matosa lost the NUM presidency to his former deputy, Joseph Montisetse. While David Sipunzi maintained his position as General Secretary, edging out Mbuyiseni Hibana. Other returning individuals to the ‘top nine’ include, William Mabapa, who was uncontested for the Deputy General Secretary role, and Helen Diatile, who remains the union’s National Chairperson for Education.
