Oh Dal-su admits to allegations of sexual misconduct

On Wednesday, 28 February, South Korean actor Oh Dal-su has admitted to allegations of sexual harassment and apologised to the victims.

He issued a public apology to the victims he has been harassing for years: “The series of events are all my fault…I bow my head in apology for anyone who has been hurt because of me.”

On Tuesday, he had initially denied the allegations, however, the next day he was removed from the tvN drama “My Mister.”

His heartfelt apology comes after theater actress Uhm Ji Young appeared on JTBC News Room on Tuesday evening, 27 February, to give out more details regarding the accusation she made against Oh Dal-su.

She said that back in 2003, she was seeking acting advice for an upcoming audition. “He said he was embarrassed because his face was well known and said we should go somewhere, which was a motel,” says the actress. She continues: “He said that we should speak comfortably and that we should wash up since it was hot. He put his hands on my body to take my clothes off”

She adds that she was afraid that if she did not going to come forward and reveal her name, it would be treated as if it never happened.

Uhm Ji Young currently teaches students who are preparing to become actors. “I didn’t want these kids to also get sexually harassed on set like me after working hard and going to the Department of Theater and Film,” she said.

She also added that she thinks she is not the only victim: “I heard a lot of things. I definitely think there are more.”

It is a rare case in South Korea for a victim of a sexual assault to come forward revealing her identity, due to fears of prejudice and stigmatization.
