NUMSA to meet with Harmony Gold for wage talks

NUMSA has confirmed that it will be meeting with Harmony Gold for another round of wage talks, and has outlined the burning demands expected to be met by the employer.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) issued a statement on Wednesday, 28 July 2021, confirming that it will be meeting with Harmony Gold for another round of wage talks. NUMSA is set to meet with employers at Harmony Gold under the auspices of the CCMA for the fourth meeting, in which the employer will be making its presentations in response to NUMSA’s demands.

The union outlined some of its burning demands, which include a three-year agreement of a 15 percent increase in year one, 16 percent in year two, and 17 percent in year three. It is also demanding a housing allowance in order to enable housing ownership for its members.

NUMSA is asking for all underground workers to receive a risk premium benefit or underground allowance, as all workers are exposed to danger when they are at work underground. NUMSA also demanded compensation for workers who use the conveyor belt underground. NUMSA further noted that its workers are the most affected by the ailing economy and are amongst the hardest hit by the poor socio-economic outlook, as they earn low salaries and are calling for a worker living wage.
