NUMSA seeks mediation from CCMA regarding Gautrain strike

NUMSA took to Twitter to provide an update on the ongoing Gautrain strike, stating that it has enlisted the CCMA as a mediator until a resolution is reached.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) took to Twitter on Monday, 12 October 2020, to provide an update on the ongoing strike action against the Gautrain. The union’s members have been on strike for the past week, as of Monday, 5 October 2020.

The strike action was undertaken due to NUMSA highlighting how Bombela Operating Company had allegedly attempted to intimidate its members into agreeing to a four percent increase, while the union was calling for an eight percent increase. According to subsequent communication, Bombela Operating Company and the management of the Gautrain were willing to negotiate.

However, the latest post suggests that even when the two parties did come together, they could not reach common ground. The union has since called on the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) to mediate. While they attempt to find a resolution, NUMSA has asserted that the strike action will continue.
