NUM has released a statement calling out outgoing President Trump for his support of the Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, further calling on Biden to reverse the decision.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), on Thursday, 17 December 2020, circulated a statement detailing its stance on the proclamations made by the United States’ outgoing President Donald Trump. According to the statement, Trump has opted to recognise the Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.
NUM stated, “Donald Trump has hastily pushed for the normalization of the relationship between Morocco and Israel, in return [for the] US recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara against international resolutions at the United Nations and the African Union, which recognizes Western Sahara’s right to self-determination and sovereignty. Donald Trump has again shown his disregard and disrespect for multilateralism.”
The statement further claimed that Trump did not consult the most affected communities before reaching his decision. As part of the remedial, the union has called on Presidential-elect, Joe Biden to reverse the decision.
Additionally, NUM called on “the United Nations and African Union to reject these with the contempt it deserves. The sovereignty and right to self-determination cannot be decided by a loser who has gone berserk trying to please his friends in Israel.”
