NUM plans total shutdown of Eskom, seeking removal of de Ruyter

Published on

The NUM Highveld Region is planning a total shutdown of Eskom and is calling for de Ruyter’s removal, in an effort to address the crisis facing the power utility.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in the Highveld Region issued a statement on Thursday, 9 September 2021, calling for the removal of Eskom CEO, Andre de Ruyter. It also announced plans of a total shutdown of the power utility.

The NUM is said to have held an urgent Eskom Regional Shopsteward Council to discuss concerns around what it believes to be Eskom insulting its employees by coercively implementing a 1.5 percent salary increment and adjusting the conditions of service. The NUM further claimed that Eskom CEO, Andre de Ruyter is violating the Constitution, Eskom’s recognition agreement, and undermining organised labour unions by engaging directly with its members on Central Bargaining Forum (CBF) issues. The union also called for the removal of de Ruyter, as it believes he has not been held accountable for major issues surrounding Eskom, with an Eskom crisis march to Luthuli House also said to be on the cards.
