NSFAS confirms continued funding for qualifying 2020 beneficiaries

Published on

NSFAS has shared a statement asserting its intention to continue funding qualifying 2020 students, despite claiming to be experiencing budget constraints this year.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) took to Twitter on Wednesday, 20 January 2021, to circulate a statement. The statement was to clarify that NSFAS 2020 beneficiaries will continue to receive funding this year.

According to NSFAS, “NSFAS beneficiaries continued to receive their funding during 2020. Although the available funding at NSFAS is constrained, we will continue to provide living allowances to those students who qualify.” These were reportedly Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Blade Nzimande’s sentiments from his update on NSFAS and the academic year for tertiary institutions. The matter of the constrained budget is one that Nzimande touched on, but did not elaborate on.

It is speculated that the financial constraints could be die to the budget cut that the department was subjected to, in order for funds to be allocated to the bailout of South African Airways (SAA). Alternatively, it could be due to the irregular expenditure that was reported by the Auditor-General’s office on the Department of Higher Education, Science and Technology.
