NSFAS clarifies that it no longer funds legacy qualifications

NSFAS has released a statement clarifying that it no longer covers new legacy qualifications students, as they are considered deviations from the DHET qualifications sub-framework.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) took to Twitter on Tuesday, 23 February 2021, to circulate a statement providing clarity on the classification of Department of Higher Education Training (DHET) qualifications. The statement was to address any confusion on which qualifications are eligible for funding from NSFAS.

According to the statement, NSFAS no longer covers new legacy qualifications students. Although legacy qualifications were initially covered by NSFAS, it has now been decided that qualifications that are not aligned with the DHET sub-frameworks should not be covered by the scheme any longer.

The statement noted, “Students who are already enrolling in these legacy qualifications may continue and complete their qualifications as their funding will not be affected. Universities are required to register first-time entrance students on the new qualifications aligned to the Higher Education Qualification Sub Framework (HEQS) as from the 2020 academic year. The Bachelor of Nursing and the BEd – NQF level 7 replace the BCurr and the NQF level 8 – Bachelor of Education (BEd) qualifications and are both NSFAS-funded qualifications.”
