NSFAS Board and PCHET detail plans of improvement

Published on

The NSFAS Board and PCHET have detailed their plans to improve the funding scheme, which comes shortly after their joint meeting.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) took to Twitter on Wednesday, 19 May 2021, to detail the outcomes of its board and Portfolio Committee on Higher Education, Science and Technology’s (PCHET) meeting. The two bodies met on Tuesday, 18 May 2021, for a formal introduction and to provide details on the functions of the funding scheme.

Thereafter, the two bodies conducted a cluster meeting to discuss how to improve the scheme. The joint statement has noted the resolutions that were reached by the two entities during the meeting, one of which addresses the turnaround time for the verification of applications and appeals.

According to the statement, “On the student-centred model, we have commissioned an application system and process that will make real-time funding eligibility decisions, appeals will be immediate for new students, and for continuing students, a new appeal portal will be introduced in the second semester which will assist in timely decision-making. Furthermore, the Board, working with the DHET, is exploring funding policy issues.”
