The NPA has released a statement reaffirming its intention to focus on fighting corruption and recovering funds that were stolen or wastefully used.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) took to Twitter on Friday, 16 April 2021, to endorse a statement circulated by the government. The statement functioned as the NPA’s assertion that it is set to have a renewed focus on fighting corruption and “ensuring that earnings of crime are recovered.”
The assertion and refocus comes on the back of the law agency reflecting on its effectiveness in fighting the aforementioned. Moreover, it comes in light of the appointment of a new National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), Advocate Shamila Batohi, in 2019. Batohi aims to stabilize the NPA and instill a sense of confidence in the law agency.
In discussing the obstacles she has faced since assuming office, Batohi was quoted as saying, “The NPA was starved of resources and had the highest vacancy rate ever, at around 21 percent, as there had been no recruitment for over four years due to budget constraints, which led to low staff morale.”
The aforementioned, along with a host of other problems, resulted in Bahoti first needing to fix the internal issues of the authority before focusing on fighting corruption.
