NPA confirms 46 suspects charged for alleged looting of Diepsloot mall

The NPA has confirmed that 46 suspects have been charged for the alleged violence and looting of a mall in Diepsloot, with a bail hearing expected to be set.

On Thursday, 15 July 2021, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that 46 suspects have appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on charges related to the alleged unrest and looting at a Diepsloot Mall. According to the NPA, the suspects have been charged with public violence, house breaking with intent to commit an offence, theft, malicious injury to property, trespassing, convening a gathering in contravention of the Disaster Management Act, as well as contravention of the regulations in respect of the restriction on the movement of persons.

The NPA stated that only 44 out of the 46 were remanded in custody, for the South African Police Service (SAPS) to gather information for the preparation of their bail applications. The NPA also stated that two of the suspects had been hospitalised, with the matter being remanded to Thursday, 22 July 2021.
