Tops at Spar, the liquor store affiliated with nationwide franchise, Spar, has informed customers that reports of them being open during the national lockdown is fake news.
In a Twitter post on Monday, 6 April 2020, Tops at Spar confirmed the circulation of fake news regarding its operations.. The reports falsely stated that the liquor store will be open on Tuesday, 7 April and Thursday, 9 April 2020, to provide alcohol to South Africans wishing to festively celebrate the Easter Weekend. The post stated, “Fake news alert! If we were reopening, you would hear it here first! As per our government’s request, Tops at Spar will be closed until 17 April 2020.”
Tops at Spar has complied with the rules and regulations of the lockdown, stipulated by President Cyril Ramaphosa. This includes adhering to the ban on the sales and distribution of alcohol during the lockdown period, which has been prohibited, as a way of discouraging social gatherings and possible violent behaviour.
