Niehaus calls for Mbalula to retract statement about him

Mabuza Attorneys issued a letter to the Minister of Transport on behalf of their client, Carl Niehaus, to retract his statement made in an interview with BBC.

On Thursday, 22 July 2021, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) veteran, Carl Niehaus published a letter addressed to the Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, calling for him to retract and apologize unconditionally for a comment he made on a BBC television interview. Niehaus’ legal representative, Mabuza Attorneys wrote to the minister and noted that in an interview with the BBC HARDtalk on Wednesday, 21 July 2021, Mbalula accused Niehaus of being at the forefront of last week’s civil unrests in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Gauteng.

Mabuza Attorneys called the minister’s statement false, malicious and misleading, suggesting that it meant that their client led, or was part of, the people who led or orchestrated the civil unrests, which was false. Mabuza Attorneys further stated that the minister’s allegations implied that Niehaus is a criminal and engaged in criminal acts which were also malicious. Mabuza Attorneys claimed that Mbalula has completely ignored and twisted the facts, creating the impression that their client is a criminal.

Niehaus’ Attorneys called for Mbalula to retract his statement and apologise by no later than 15:00 on Friday, 23 July 2021. Should Mbalula fail to comply, Mabuza Attorneys made it clear that Niehaus will pursue the necessary legal steps.
