The NDoH has confirmed the preparation of 87 sites nationwide for the beginning of phase two of the vaccination programme, which is predominantly aimed at the elderly.

The National Department of Health (NDoH) took to Twitter on Monday, 17 May 2021, to confirm the readiness of 87 vaccination sites across the country, which have been prepared for the commencement of phase two of the Sisonke Vaccination Programme. Phase two of the plan is focused on the most vulnerable group to COVID-19 – the elderly. Citizens over the age of 60 years old were encouraged to register for the vaccine through the online portal or the newly created WhatsApp hotline.

In the shared statement, Minister Zweli Mkhize was quoted as saying, “As we speak, SMS messages are being dispatched with invitations to vaccinate tomorrow [on Monday] and over 7 000 are being dispatched to healthcare workers and 4 288 to citizens 60 years and above.” Moreover, Mkhize clarified, “We will continue to vaccinate healthcare workers and complete the targeted 1.2 million by the end of the week.”

Additionally, the NDoH has confirmed that it aims to have over 200 active vaccination sites by the end of the week. It has also been stipulated that highly populated provinces will not accept walk-ins. However, provinces that are not highly populated will accept walk-ins at some vaccination sites.
