Nathi Mthethwa pays tribute to the late Dr Kenneth Kaunda

Nathi Mthethwa has paid a touching tribute to the late former president of the Republic of Zambia, in a virtual memorial webinar celebrating the life and legacy of Kaunda.

On Monday, 5 July 2021, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa paid tribute to the late former president of the Republic of Zambia, Dr Kenneth Kaunda. The minister spoke highly of Kaunda in a virtual memorial webinar celebrating the life and legacy of the founding president of Zambia. Kaunda passed away on Thursday, 17 June 2021, and was laid to rest in a state funeral on Friday, 2 July 2021.

Mthethwa stated that upon his death, humanity lost an advocate of peace, social justice, gender equality, and an ambassador for the wretched of the earth. Mthethwa described the late president as a man of great discipline and dedication, conviction and conscience, as well as humour and humanity. Dr Kaunda was the last surviving leader of the generation who lit the path to Africa’s freedom from colonial misrule.

Mthethwa also noted that South Africa owes its freedom and independence to the gallant statesman and a true sincere African liberator. “Nothing will erase Dr Kaunda’s legacy – a great leader who fought for the defence of peace, independence and security in Africa and the world over,” said Mthethwa, emphasising that what Dr Kaunda stood for lives on.
