Mthethwa congratulates SA athletes for silver medal wins

The Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture issued a media statement on Minister Nathi Mthethwa congratulating athletes, Tatjana Schoenmaker and Bianca Buitendag, on winning silver medals at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture issued a statement by Minister Nathi Mthethwa on Tuesday, 27 July 2021, congratulating South African athletes, Tatjana Schoenmaker and Bianca Buitendag, on their wins at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The ministry confirmed that Minister Nathi Mthethwa congratulated both athletes for their wins for South Africa, both achieving silver medal wins.

The ministry noted that Tatjana collected a silver medal during the 100 metre breaststroke swimming, while Bianca collected her silver medal in the woman’s surfing finals. The ministry also noted that Schoenmaker has remained the first South African female swimmer to win an Olympic medal since Penny Heyns, who collected a bronze at the 2000 Olympic Games.

According to the Sports Ministry, Bianca Buitendag remained the only participant at the Tokyo Olympics Surfing Competition currently not competing in the Surfing Word Tour, but managed to beat Yolanda Hopkins to advance to the finals. The Minister of Sports was quoted as stating, “Congratulations to our first two silver medallists, who have done an exceptional job at elevating women’s sport on the globe. I am confident we will continue to make an impact.”
