Minister Nathi Mthethwa has appointed a Ministerial Advisory Team to better facilitate engagement between the department and the creative and cultural sector, following continued backlash.
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa’s department took to Twitter on Tuesday, 9 March 2021, to confirm the appointment of a new Ministerial Advisory Team (MAT). The team has been appointed to better facilitate the relationship between the department and the local creative and cultural sector.
Mthethwa’s department has been receiving much criticism of late over its supposed lack of support for the entertainment industry and creatives. The matter reached its peak at the height of the lockdown, when artists could not generate any income. At the time, the department had confirmed that it had provided funding to artists that had applied for the relief grant and funding, however, there were suggestions of bias in the process.
According to the statement, “In an effort to find amicable solutions, working with the sector, the Minister established MAT comprising of leaders in various portfolios of the creative sector. The work of MAT is structured as per five (5) work streams.”
