Mozambique is set continue mobilizing support for reconstruction work and livelihood assistance for victims of two tropical storms that affected the country in the last two months.
This was reportedly announced by President Filipe Nyusi, who was quoted on Thursday, 9 May 2019, as saying his government was working on measures to assist in recovery efforts by communities affected by Cyclone Idai and Cyclone Kenneth, which hit in March 2019 and April 2019 respectively.
“We want to see if we can mobilize very quickly mobile bridges in some sections to help while in another area the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Water will work to create diversions to ensure movement of people,” he said.
He was speaking during a visit to Memba district in Nampula province which was affected by Cyclone Kenneth. Central and northern parts of Mozambique were hit by heavy rains that triggered flooding in March and April, respectively.
Cyclone Idai left 602 people dead and destroyed infrastructure in the port city of Beira in March, while Cyclone Kenneth claimed 43 lives and also caused extensive damage in the Nampula province.
Nyusi emphasised that the situation in Memba is very serious and that there is an urgent need for reconstruction work.
The Mozambican authorities have appealed for about 300 million dollars in humanitarian assistance.
