Montana suggests the People’s Train is not a new idea

Lucky Montana took to Twitter to detail the long history of the People’s Train, further suggesting that Mbalula merely presented a project founded under the Zuma administration.

Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), Lucky Montana took to Twitter on Monday, 8 March 2021, to share the history of the newly launched People’s Train. The new trains that are set to be introduced nationally were formally launched at the Langa Train Station in Cape Town by Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula and the PRASA Board.

Following the reveal of the trains, it was suggested that the project was initiated during the Jacob Zuma administration, but was never completed. Therefore, when Montana was tagged in the post showcasing the supposed new trains, he commented on the recent launch.

Montana stated, “In 2014, I addressed PRASA employees, telling them we’re building a modern train system to deliver ‘high-quality public transport services,’ but one affordable to ordinary citizens, as opposed to a train service designed for ‘People on the Move.’  I dubbed it the ‘People’s Train.’”

In subsequent tweets, Montana detailed the origins of the trains, which Mbalula presented without the context that has now been provided.
