MMA and the Electoral Commission have announced their multi-stakeholder partnership with major social media platforms, to help in the scourge of misinformation and disinformation on the upcoming elections.
Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) issued a statement on Wednesday, 20 October 2021, announcing a multi-stakeholder partnership with the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa to combat disinformation in the 2021 municipal elections. Both stakeholders have partnered with major social media platforms to fight the spread of disinformation in the build-up to the elections.
Media Monitoring confirmed that on Tuesday, 19 October 2021, the commission and MMA reached an agreement with social media platforms, Google, Facebook, Twitter and TikTok to work in support of its efforts to end the problem of disinformation. Both parties will use Real411, a system developed by MMA, as a key component in the respective and combined efforts to deal with disinformation and misinformation, as well as a separate software called PADRE. This software will help to identify and eliminate any misinformation and disinformation that may be contained in advertisements published in all media.
