The MKMVA has released a statement affirming its support for Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and her decision to deploy Cuban engineers to deal with the water issues.
Carl Niehaus, Head of the uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA), took to Twitter on Wednesday, 28 April 2021, to show his support for Minister Lindiwe Sisulu. This past week, the Minister of Human Settlement, Water and Sanitation announced her polarising decision to deploy Cuban engineers to assist with the ongoing water infrastructure and operations maintenance that appears to have eluded the department.
It was also reported that the department set aside an estimated R65 million for the deployment of the Cuban engineers, whose arrival has been confirmed. Moreover, the minister has denied the suggestion that the deployment could have been avoided by hiring local engineers to deal with the matter.
In light of Tuesday, 27 April 2021, being observed as Freedom Day, Niehaus suggested that the relationship between Cuba and South Africa has been a long-standing one. He further claimed that it was endorsed by the late president, Nelson Mandela, therefore, to accuse the Cubans of stealing the jobs of deserving South Africans is incorrect, according to Niehaus.
