Ministry of Transport continues Western Cape taxi interventions

Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula is set to continue with Western Cape taxi interventions, and has cautioned taxi industry players against violence and lawlessness, condemning killings and calling for calm.

The Ministry of Transport, on Monday, 19 July 2021, issued a statement confirming that Minister Fikile Mbalula will still be continuing with the Western Cape taxi interventions. The interventions are aimed at strengthening unity and cohesion in the taxi industry, particularly in the Western Cape.

According to the ministry, Mbalula has been engaged in discussions with representatives of the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA), as well as the Congress of Democratic Taxi Associations (CODETA). The ministry stated that taxi violence in the province flared up in recent months, and that the department is in discussions to address the issue.

Minister Mbalula, joined by the province’s Member of the Executive Council (MEC) responsible for transport, Daylin Mitchell, and Community Safety MEC, Albert Fritz, has condemned the killings and called for calm. Mbalula also cautioned industry players to refrain from violence and lawlessness.
