Miners trapped at Beatrix mine have all been rescued says Union

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) says miners who were trapped underground since Wednesday night at the Beatrix Mine have all been rescued as of this morning, 2 February 2018.

The Beatrix Mine, located in Welkom, is an operation owned by Sibanye Stillwater.

The NUM also confirmed that all workers did not sustain any injuries. In a statement, the union said that rescued mineworkers “are all healthy, but they are just exhausted and resting at home.”

The union, however, decried the lack of contingency measures at the mine, stating that there was no “contingency plan put in place to deal with this kind of an incident.”

On Wednesday, 31, January at least 950 mineworkers were trapped underground at the Beatrix Mine following a power outage at the mine. Rescue operations carried on deep into the night.
