Kenneth Meshoe has continued his fight in opposition of the Firearms Control Amendment Bill, this time, by showcasing the alleged lack of efficiency by the SAPS.
Leader of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Kenneth Meshoe took to Twitter on Thursday, 3 June 2021, to continue highlighting his belief in the importance of the public being able to carry private firearms. This follows Minister of Police, Bheki Cele’s endorsement of the amendment of the Firearms Control Act. The amendment would make it illegal for private firearm owners to be armed, albeit for self-defence purposes.
Cele indicated that the amendment is a move towards doing away with illegal firearms in the country. Moreover, the amendment is expected to lead to less gun-related deaths, whether in domestic cases due to crimes of passion or in communities plagued by gangsterism.
However, the post by Meshoe highlighted the aftermath of an attack, for instance, a hijacking and the delayed responses South Africans face from the South African Police Service (SAPS). He further noted that in some cases, victims were saved by the local policing forum in their communities using their private firearms. Meshoe also emphasised that considering the high crime rate and poor response time by the police, if private members of the public cannot carry firearms, who will protect them?
See the post below.
The Police Minister wants to disarm private citizens who want to defend themselves against armed robbers who terrorize communities with rifles and short-guns. Govt does not care about our safety & security. https://t.co/2gdTUyqaq0
