Mboweni irate over backlash for calling for postponement of elections

Published on

Tito Mboweni has expressed his frustration at being ridiculed for his unexpected stance on the upcoming local government elections, which he believes should be postponed.

The African National Congress’ (ANC) Tito Mboweni took to Twitter on Monday, 3 May 2021, to express his frustration at the backlash he has been receiving for suggesting that the upcoming elections be postponed. The tweet was shared on Sunday, 2 May 2021, stating, “You don’t need a PhD to see the dangers of gatherings, election rallies, door to door campaigning and voting lines. Postpone this thing and save lives!! The world won’t end!! I am not attending any rally or any face to face meeting. Thank you.”

Mboweni faced backlash from those suggesting that it is a bit too late for him to voice his stance now. They claimed that he could have influenced the ruling party’s postponement of the elections scheduled for Wednesday, 27 October 2021, as set out by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). On the other hand, some humorously referenced Mboweni’s culinary skills, which he did not find amusing this time.
