Tito Mboweni took to Twitter after presenting the MTBPS and suggested that he invoked the late Nelson Mandela with the speech, despite the various concerns raised after its presentation.
Minister of Finance, Tito Mboweni took to Twitter on Wednesday, 28 October 2020, to suggest that his Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) invoked the name of the late political icon, Nelson Mandela. This was sparked by an image of Mboweni standing where he claims Mandela stood 26 years ago in Parliament.
His subsequent posts were in the same vain, with the minister only sharing the moments leading up to the speech. However, Mboweni did not use his platform to engage his followers on topical matters that arose from the MTBPS, like the tax hikes and continuous bailouts that troubled parastatal, South African Airways (SAA), continues to get.
His tweet showcased a minister that is proud, partly due to having been captured standing next to Mandela’s grandson, Nkosi Mandla Mandela.
See the post below.
Ah! There is Nkosi Mandla Mandela! Tall, and with a dignified presence just like his grandfather whose name I invoked in my delivery today! Look at him. I said “those of us who have stood where giants once stood”! 26 years ago, Madiba stood on that exact spot in Parliament. pic.twitter.com/bO7eXKGVvc
