Mboweni calls for land leases for the youth

Published on

Tito Mboweni took to Twitter to express his concern at the lack of investment in the youth, by suggesting that land should be leased to them by the government.

Minister of Finance, Tito Mboweni took to Twitter on Thursday, 14 January 2021, to raise alarm on his observation on the supposed lack of support that is given to the youth. The prompt of the posts remains unclear, however, Mboweni stressed the importance of upskilling and encouraging entrepreneurship amongst the youth.

Mboweni noted, “Never before has it become urgent that we enable and support young people who want to go farming and start small businesses. We must give them land leases urgently and ensure that banks and other relevant financial institutions support SMMEs. Call to action!”

In a subsequent tweet, Mboweni claimed that he will work with banks to ensure that they jump on board to support SMMEs. The suggestion drew scepticism, considering that Mboweni and the ruling party have already been suspected to be in cahoots with big businesses. Therefore, to suggest that he work with banks, instead of the government that he is a part of, has raised some eyebrows.
