Mavuso believes that red tape is negatively impacting businesses

Published on

Mavuso has detailed how red tape is having a crippling effect on small businesses and businesses in general, resulting in costs to time and resources due to compliance.

Business Leadership South Africa’s (BLSA) CEO, Busi Mavuso has expressed that although some degree of red tape imposed on businesses is necessary to protect consumers and ensure orderly commercial activity, South Africa can do better. In a piece published on Tuesday, 12 October 2021, she pointed out how, for small businesses, the COVID-19 environment is more than enough to deal with, but unfortunately, they have also found themselves burdened with having to comply with laws and regulations.

Additionally, they also deal with inefficient local government officials and structures to navigate bureaucracy with approvals needed for just about any entrepreneurial endeavours, such as licenses and permit renewals. She also observed that while red tape is necessary for small businesses, the economic cost of time and resources committed to compliance is having a crippling effect, and she further noted that this needs to be fixed.
