Mavuso astounded by lack of outcry at political level on ICASA spectrum termination

Published on

The BLSA CEO has expressed surprise at the lack of stronger outcry political level on the plan by ICASA to terminate access to emergency spectrum in November.

Business Leadership South Africa’s CEO, Busi Mavuso issued her weekly newsletter on Monday, 27 September 2021. Mavuso highlighted how the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa’s (ICASA) proposed plan to terminate access to emergency spectrum will mean that businesses will be hard hit, especially in the township sectors that rely on efficient mobile broadband.

Mavuso stressed that this will make it harder for workers to connect from home, leaving businesses with a difficult choice of either forcing workers back into the office, or letting them go. She further noted how the move by ICASA had hit the business process outsourcing sector, which she believes was the one area of the economy that managed to grow employment during the pandemic. Mavuso also noted how the decision has also damaged the confidence in the call centre industry, and expressed some surprise at the lack of outcry at political level.
