Mauritanian and Senegalese delegations in talks over fisheries agreement

Mauritanian and Senegalese delegations began talks on Tuesday, 18 December 2018, in Nouakchott on how to implement the bilateral fisheries agreement signed in July 2018.

The two delegations are led by the Mauritanian and Senegalese fisheries ministers, Yahya Ould Abdedayem and Oumar Gueye.

Signed on the sidelines of the 31st African Union Summit held in the Mauritanian capital in July, the bilateral fisheries agreement had so far awaited consensual measures for practical implementation.

In addition to implementation of the fisheries agreement, the parties will also discuss issues related to the conclusion of a model agreement for the rental of artisanal fishing vessels, the Senegalese minister said at the opening of the meeting.

Talks will also include the issuing of fishing licences to beneficiaries and the launching of fishing activities, he added.

His Mauritanian counterpart stressed that the objective of the meeting is to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in the area of artisanal fisheries.

The agreement between the Dakar and Nouakchott allows Senegalese fishing boats to fish in Mauritanian waters, and Mauritanian fishing operators to rent Senegalese boats with their crews.
