The leader of ActionSA has called for the party’s voter registration posters that were unlawfully confiscated by the JMPD to be returned and re-installed, vowing not to be silenced.
Leader of ActionSA, Herman Mashaba issued a statement on Tuesday, 31 August 2021, in which he detailed that the party had written to the City of Johannesburg, demanding the return and re-installation of ActionSA voter registration posters. According to him, they were unlawfully taken away by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD).
Mashaba alleged that the instruction had been from JMPD Director, Mathokoza Kgaswane because “the election had not been proclaimed.” He called this a clear falsehood and a blatant abuse of power for political ends. Mashaba further confirmed that ActionSA had demanded that the posters be returned and re-installed within the next 24 hours, or it will be forced to seek an urgent spoliation order from the courts against the JMPD.
Mashaba also stressed that what was at stake was more than just pieces of promotional material, but the right to freedom of speech and political activity entrenched in the Constitution. He emphasised that the party would not be undermined and censored by those who had been captured by the African National Congress (ANC), nor deterred in its attempts to give a voice to the people of South Africa.
