Mashaba against proposal of a United States of Africa
Herman Mashaba has made it clear that he is against the suggestion of a United States of Africa, despite being a supporter of intra-continental trade relationships.
ActionSA leader, Herman Mashaba took to Twitter on Sunday, 17 January 2021, to share his sentiments on the suggestion of unifying the continent into a single state, like the United States of America. Mashaba was responding to a post that asked for his and the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) Mbuyiseni Ndlozi’s thoughts on the matter.
Politically, the two and their parties stand on two opposite ends with regards to the formation of a United States of Africa. The EFF and Ndlozi used the opportunity to reiterate their stance and champion a borderless Africa, where travel between African countries would not require a passport or visa.
Mashaba alluded to being against the formation of a United States of Africa and, instead, claimed, “A united Africa must be grounded on the tenets of the respect for human rights, democratic governments and the rule of law, otherwise go and have it somewhere else and leave South Africa alone. Come and talk to us when ready. Will in the meantime watch and monitor with interest.”
