Manufacturing production increases by 1.8 percent in August 2021

StatsSA has released the findings of the manufacturing production and sales industry, with production increasing by 1.8 percent and the largest negative contributors decreasing by -21.8 percent for August.

On Tuesday, 12 October 2021, Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) released its key findings on the manufacturing production and sales industry for August 2021. The results indicated an increase in manufacturing production of 1.8 percent, while seasonally adjusted manufacturing sales increased by 10.3 percent for August 2021.

The largest contributors were food and beverages, increasing by 9.7 percent and contributing 2.3 percentage points. Motor vehicles, parts and transport equipment increased by 17.7 percent, contributing 1.4 percentage points. Iron, steel and metal products increased by 7.6 percent, contributing 1.4 percentage points. Wood, paper, publishing and printing increased by 12.5 percent, contributing 1.2 percentage points, and furniture and manufacturing increased 19.8 percent with 0.8 points.

The largest negative contributor to manufacturing production was the petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic division, decreasing by 21.8 percent and contributing -5.6 percentage points. Seasonally adjusted production increased by 7.6 percent in August 2021, following month-on-month changes of -8.4 percent in July and -0.5 in June 2021.
