Magashule weighs in on SABC retrenchment saga
The ANC’s Secretary-General, Ace Magashule has weighed in on the SABC retrenchment saga, as he was recently interviewed by the public broadcaster on the topical matter.
The African National Congress’ (ANC) Secretary-General (SG), Ace Magashule, on Wednesday, 18 November 2020, spoke on behalf of the ruling party about the imminent retrenchments at the South African Broadcasting Commission (SABC). According to a statement that was previously issued by the SABC, the planned retrenchments are just one of its cost-cutting and restructuring methods.
In the interview, Magashule made it clear that the party is against the retrenchments proposed by the SABC Board. Magashule made it clear that of late, the ANC and Secretariat Alliance may have been relatively inactive, but that will not be the case in this situation. The SG also claimed to have all the confidence in Minister of Communications, Telecommunications and Postal Services, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams to ensure that the retrenchment plans are not fulfilled.
Throughout the first 15 minutes of the interview, Magashule confidently expressed that there will be no retrenchments. He also highlighted that the plan sounds like an attempt to privatise the public broadcaster, which was alluded to in a statement issued by the Secretariat Alliance before the interview.
