Livestock contributes 24 percent to Mauritania’s GDP and also provides 14.6 percent of employment opportunities.
This was announced by the Mauritanian Minister of Higher Education, Sidi Ould Salem, speaking at the opening of the 47th session of the Governing Board of the Interstate School of Veterinary Sciences and Medicine of Dakar (EISMV) in Nouakchott on Thursday.
Mauritania has a large livestock population estimated at 16 million sheep and goats, 1.6 million cattle and 1.4 million camels.
The EISMV is now one of the sub-regional academic institutions that command admiration and respect and that in collaboration with the Department of Livestock, it is encouraging students to train there to close the human resource gap in this area.
In addition to Senegal and Mauritania, the EISMV created in 1968, includes Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Gabon, Mali, Niger, Rwanda and Togo.
