On Tuesday, 19 June 2018 Political Analysis South Africa spoke to Deon Reyneke, who is the deputy secretary general of trade union, Solidarity.
Trade unions Solidarity, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) will resume wage talks with Eskom today, 19 June 2018.
Talks between the unions and the power utility broke down earlier this month with unions accusing Eskom of negotiating in bad faith after it placed a zero percent wage increase on the table. Following a strike by workers affiliated with NUM and Numsa, and an intervention by Public Enterprise Minister, Pravin Gordon last week, the parties agreed to resume wage talks.
Reyneke says Solidarity will wait to see a new wage offer by Eskom before they revise their demands of a 9.5% increase.
“From Solidarity’s side we will seriously consider our claims because we are currently on 9.5%, so we will definitely revise our offer if we see that Eskom is willing to negotiate,” Reyneke said.
