[LISTEN] Solidarity confident that Eskom is willing to negotiate

On Friday, 22 June 2018 Political Analysis South Africa spoke to Deon Reyneke, who is the deputy general secretary of trade union, Solidarity.

Wage negotiations at Eskom will resume next week after unions Solidarity; the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) rejected a 4.7% offer by the power utility. The workers are demanding 9% wage increase for 2018 and a housing allowance of R1000.

Reyneke says, that Eskom has shown a willingness to revise their offer and negotiate further.

“The indication that we got yesterday when we left is that…due to the fact that the parties agreed that there will be a possible deal for three years, that will give Eskom stability and a forecast to work to. So, the fact that they are taking to the board without saying “no we’re not going to meet that” is indication that there is room for negotiations,” Reyneke said.
