[LISTEN] People should not be intimidated for their views on Palestine

On Wednesday, 20 June Political Analysis South Africa spoke to Charisse Zeifert, who is the head of communications at the SA Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD).

The SAJBD has condemned attacks against model and entrepreneur Shashi Naidoo, following her comments on Gaza.

Naidoo recently came under fire for calling Gaza a “shithole”, on her Instagram profile. She also accused Palestinians of trying to annihilate Israel by building terror tunnels and rockets.

The model has since apologised for her comments and has further committed to go on what she terms a ‘fact-finding mission’ to Palestine, organised by anti-Israel lobby group, BDS, and the South African Council of Churches.

Zeifert says, Naidoo’s freedom of speech was threatened when she received death threats for her views. She adds that the different opinions held by the public on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict should be expressed without fear of intimidation.

“What worries me about this is that people who do love Israel will be intimidated… As South Africans, we should all laud that right to freedom of expression and freedom of association,” Zeifert said.
