[LISTEN] Over 1400 operations cancelled at Bara Hospital in 2017

On Wednesday, 23 May 2018 Political Analysis South Africa’s Thando Maeko spoke to Jack Bloom, who is the Democratic Alliance (DA) Shadow MEC for Health in Gauteng.

In a written reply to Bloom, the MEC for Health in Gauteng, Dr Gwendoline Ramokgopa revealed that 1433 operations at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto were cancelled last year due to, among other things, long waiting lists, poor infrastructure and insufficient patient beds.

Bloom says he plans to conduct an oversight visit at the hospital to ascertain the true depth of the challenges facing the institution.

“Chris Hani Baragwanath is definitely on my list. The largest hospital in Gauteng, it’s very important that I see for myself whether conditions are improving or deteriorating,” he said.
