[LISTEN] Minors should be protected from violent political protests

On Wednesday, 27 June 2018 Political Analysis South Africa spoke to Anton Alberts, who is the Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) chairperson and spokesperson for Basic Education.

Parliament has published a notice inviting the public to make written submissions on the proposed amendments to the Gatherings Amendments Bill.  The amendments, which were introduced as a private member’s bill by Alberts, would bar the public from protesting outside schools and other areas designated for minors. Alberts says, the amendments are aimed at protecting children from violence at their institutions of learning.

“If we say we protect the rights of minors and its enshrined in the constitution…then how can we expose minors to  the problems that adults have with each other on a political level?” Alberts said.
