[LISTEN] HOSPERSA has rejected public sector wage offer

On Tuesday, 22 May 2018 Political Analysis South Africa’s Thando Maeko spoke to Kevin Halama, who is the Spokesperson for HOSPERSA.

The Health and Other Service Personnel Trade Union of South Africa (HOSPERSA) has rejected the public sector wage offer finalised at the Public Sector Co-ordinating Bargaining Council last week.

According to the agreement, employees will receive a 6% to 7% increase for the first year, and the government has presented a wage offer of CPI plus 1% for the subsequent two years. Halama said that the agreement didn’t take into account the serious economic challenges currently facing South Africa. He has urged larger unions to also reject the offer.

“We are calling on all other unions that have members in the public sector to reject this offer, and this will basically mean that the employer can’t implement an offer that majority of the members or employees in the public sector have rejected,” he said.
