On Wednesday, 23 May 2018 Political Analysis South Africa’s Thando Maeko spoke to Mashego Mashego who is the spokesperson for mining company, Harmony Gold.
Last week, a mineworker died at Harmony Gold’s Moab Khotsong mine in Viljoenskroon. The company says investigations into the fatality are currently underway.
Mashego says Harmony Gold regrets the number of worker fatalities at its mines, and that the company had placed safety as one of its priority areas, and is taking proactive steps to reduce the number of worker deaths.
“As a company we continue to focus on safety. Safety is our priority, and what we are doing is that we’ve got what you call quarterly road shows by the CEO, whereby he continues to emphasize the issues of safety that safety is not just a management issue, it’s about all employees,” he said.
