On Friday, 18 May 2018 Political Analysis South Africa’s Thando Maeko spoke to Job Dliso, who is the North West Provincial Secretary for the NUM.
Dliso spoke of some of the challenges the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) faces when attempting to persuade farmworkers into joining trade unions. He says that most farmworkers experience intimidation from their employers, and also face the prospect of losing their jobs when they join a trade union.
“It’s our concern that farmworkers are denied a right to belong to a trade union, and they are exploited to such an extent that when they want to join a trade union, employers will target them and make sure that they deal with them,” he said.
