On Tuesday, 19 June 2018 Political Analysis South Africa spoke to Kevin Mileham, who is the Democratic Alliance (DA) shadow minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
The South African Local Government Association (SALGA), faces a possible de-registration as an employer association.
In a government gazette published last week Friday, labour registrar Lehlohonolo Molefe said that the association breached sections 98, 99 and 100 of the Labour Relations Act. The Act requires that employer associations disclose and submit audited financial statements to the registrar.
Mileham says that the possible de-registration of SALGA is concerning because it has implications on the legitimacy of the association’s representation at various government structures.
“Does the fact that they are going to be de-registered concern me? Obviously it concerns me. It concerns me immensely, but that’s very much an internal administrative issue until such time that it actually happens,” Mileham said.
