Banyana Banyana has booked a 2018 COSAFA Women’s Championship final against Cameroon after beating Uganda 2-0 in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.
The tournament lead-scorers Linda Motlhalo and Jermaine Seoposenwe netted for Banyana in front of a decent crowd at KwaZakhele’s Wolfson Stadium.
Desiree Ellis’s side will now meet West African guest nation, Cameroon, in the final at the same venue at 12pm on Saturday, 22 September, while Zambia and Uganda will face off for bronze on Friday, 21 September.
“It’s all over in Port Elizabeth as @Banyana_Banyana book their place in the final against Cameroon at 12h00 at Wolfson Stadium,” tweeted Banyana’s Twitter account.
Additionally, Banyana tweeted a live photo of the team applauding the local supporters who came in numbers to support the nation, with the caption:
“Celebration time! @Banyana_Banyana celebrating their 2-0 win over Uganda in the semifinal of the 2018 COSAFA Women’s Championship at the Wolfson Stadium in Port Elizabeth.”
Banyana’s 24-year-old skilful midfielder Kholosa Biyana was named the player of the match and received a R10,000 cheque from sponsors Sasol.
South Africa is now on course to retain the title it won in Zimbabwe last year, as coach Ellis builds towards the crucial African Women’s Championship in Ghana in November 2018.
The high-calibre opponents for Saturday’s final, Cameroon, will also be at the continental finals, giving South Africa a good opportunity to test themselves against one of the favourites for the women’s AFCON title.
