Labour Department pledges support for deceased ArcelorMittal mineworkers’ families

Minister Nxesi took to Twitter to confirm his department’s pledge to support the families of the three deceased ArcelorMittal workers, who died when a building collapsed.

The Department of Employment and Labour took to Twitter on Thursday, 18 February 2021, to circulate a statement confirming the passing of three ArcelorMittal mineworkers. Their passing was as a result of a building collapsing on the premises.

The statement noted, “The department received information that the incident occurred just after 02h00 in the morning (17 February 2021) during the night shift. Part of the stack had collapsed and it fell on top of the control room. Unfortunately, the three employees could not be saved and we have instituted an investigation into the cause of the incident.”

Later in the day, Minister of Employment and Labour, Thulas Nxesi went to visit the mine. A tweet shared stated, “In meeting with the families, the minister committed that full support will be offered to the families in ensuring that their loved ones are laid to rest peacefully.”
